The Daily Word

When we were young, we trusted our parents implicitly. As we grew older we realised that this was due to the love that they had for us, they always wanted the best for us and sought with all their efforts to bring it about, even if it involved sacrifices by them.

What leads us to trust other people? With some people it is experience of interacting with them. But that type of trust probably only extends to certain parts of our life.

When we fall in love with someone and it is reciprocated, we trust them with our whole lives. That is a different level of trust, and it is based on mutual love.

What led us to trust in God? In my case it was an appreciation of my sinful condition and the realisation that Jesus had died and risen again for me as an individual to pay for my sin. But when I realised the price that God had to pay for that to happen, John 3 v 16 became real to me, which as we all know starts with “For God so loved the world that he gave…”

Real love has a strong base in trust and the next section of the verse in I Corinthians 13, reads “Love always trusts.” And our trust in God for the forgiveness of our sin, also goes on to trust him to lead us and support us through our lives. That is when we realise that we also love God and want to serve Him in our lives and that should always be the preeminent motive for our lives.
