Obedience to God in the Face of Fury

We Must Obey God Rather Than Men - Acts 5:27-33
Dear Friends, the Sanhedrin was in uproar. The apostles, who had been miraculously freed from prison the night before by an angel of the Lord, were once again standing in the temple courts boldly proclaiming the resurrection of Jesus. The high priest and the entire council had them brought in for questioning.
With all the gravity of their office, the high priest said, “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name. Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.”
In that tense moment, Peter, speaking for all the apostles, gave one of the clearest and most courageous statements in the entire New Testament:
“We must obey God rather than human beings!”
He then unfolded the heart of the gospel with theological precision:
“The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead — whom you killed by hanging him on a cross. God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Saviour that he might bring Israel to repentance and forgive their sins. We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”
This was no mere defiance. It was a profound theological declaration. Peter affirmed the resurrection as God’s decisive act, the exaltation of Jesus to the place of supreme authority, and the purpose of that exaltation — repentance and the forgiveness of sins. He also declared that the Holy Spirit Himself bears witness alongside the apostles to this truth.
The council was cut to the heart with rage and wanted to put them to death on the spot. But we know God had other plans for these disciples.
Point to Ponder: When human authority commands us to be silent about Jesus, the apostles’ words still stand as the guiding principle for every believer: “We must obey God rather than human beings.” Obedience to God is not rebellion against earthly rulers — it is submission to the highest authority.
Verse to Remember: “We must obey God rather than human beings!” (Acts 5:29 ESV)
Question to Consider: Where in your own life right now are you feeling pressure to stay silent or compromise in order to please people? What would it look like this week to say with the same courage and clarity, “I must obey God rather than men”?
