“My Sheep Hear My Voice”: The Wonderful Security of Christ’s Sheep- John 10:22-30
Dear Friends, it was the Feast of Dedication (Hanukkah) in Jerusalem. The weather was cold, and Jesus was walking in the temple courts in Solomon’s Colonnade. The Jewish leaders gathered around Him and asked what must have seemed like a straightforward question: “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly” (John 10:24 ESV).
Jesus’ answer was both profound and deeply personal. He told them that they did not believe because they were not His sheep. Then He gave one of the most beautiful and comforting descriptions of His relationship with His people in the whole Bible:
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.” (John 10:27-30 ESV)
This is one of the strongest assurances of salvation in the New Testament. Jesus does not say His sheep might have eternal life — He says He gives them eternal life. They will never perish. No one — not the devil, not circumstances, not even their own failures — can snatch them out of His hand or the Father’s hand.
• Notice the beautiful order:
• The sheep hear His voice
• He knows them intimately
• They follow Him
• He gives them eternal life
• They are secure forever
For us as Christians today this passage is both deeply comforting and gently challenging. In a world full of uncertainty, anxiety, and spiritual attack, Jesus offers us rock-solid assurance. If we belong to Him, our salvation does not depend on how strong our faith feels on any given day, but on the strength of the Shepherd who holds us.
At the same time, Jesus makes it clear that true sheep are known by their response — they hear His voice and follow Him. Hearing without following is not the mark of His sheep.
Pause & Pray: Take a quiet, unhurried moment with the Lord right now. Read John 10:27-29 slowly, perhaps out loud. Let these words sink deep into your heart. Thank Jesus that you are safe in His hand and in the Father’s hand. If you are feeling anxious, insecure, or distant from the Lord today, ask Him: “Jesus, help me to hear Your voice more clearly and to follow You more faithfully.” Rest in the wonderful truth that no one can snatch you from Him.
Verse to Remember: “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.” (John 10:28 ESV)
Question to Consider: Do you sometimes doubt the security of your salvation? How would your daily life look different this week if you truly believed that you are held firmly in both the Son’s hand and the Father’s hand — and that no one can ever snatch you away?
