Death Could Not Hold Him

Peter’s Bold Pentecost Sermon – Acts 2:14a, 22-32

Dear Friends, it’s the day of Pentecost. The Holy Spirit has come with wind and fire. The disciples are speaking in other languages, and a huge crowd has gathered in amazement and confusion. Some even mock them, saying they are drunk.

Then Peter stands up with the Eleven and raises his voice. What follows is one of the most powerful sermons ever preached:

“Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say… Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.” (vv.22-24)

Peter doesn’t hold back. He tells the crowd they are responsible for crucifying Jesus — the very man God accredited with miracles. But he also declares the wonderful truth: God raised Him from the dead. Death could not hold Him.

He then quotes Psalm 16 (David’s words) to show that the resurrection was always part of God’s plan. David spoke of the Holy One not being abandoned to the realm of the dead nor seeing decay. Peter explains that David was prophesying about Jesus, not himself.

“God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it.” (v.32)

What a turning point! The same crowd that had called for Jesus’ death is now hearing the gospel explained with boldness and clarity.

Today, pause in the quiet. Peter’s sermon shows us two vital truths:

• The resurrection of Jesus is the central fact of the Christian faith.

• The Holy Spirit gives ordinary people extraordinary boldness to proclaim it.

We may not stand before thousands like Peter did, but we all have opportunities to speak about Jesus. The same Spirit who empowered Peter is available to us today.

Point to Ponder: The resurrection is not just a nice ending to the story — it is the proof that Jesus is Lord and Christ, and the foundation of our hope.

Verse to Remember: “God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it.” (Acts 2:32 NIV)

Question to Consider: This week, in what situation might God be calling you to speak about Jesus with boldness? Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with the same courage He gave Peter — not relying on your own strength, but on the power of the risen Christ.
