Be Strong and Work — For God Is With You

“I Am With You” – The Promise That Changes Everything - Haggai 1:13 – 2:9
Dear Friends, the people of Judah had returned from exile with high hopes. They had laid the foundation of the temple, but then opposition, apathy, and self-interest had caused the work to grind to a halt for sixteen years. The house of the Lord lay in ruins while the people lived in panelled houses of their own.
Then God raised up the prophet Haggai. His message was simple but piercing: “Consider your ways.” The people listened. They feared the Lord and obeyed. And in verse 13 we read one of the most beautiful lines in the Old Testament:
“Then Haggai, the Lord’s messenger, gave this message of the Lord to the people: ‘I am with you,’ declares the Lord.”
That short phrase — “I am with you” — changed everything.
Immediately the people’s spirits were stirred. Zerubbabel the governor, Joshua the high priest, and the whole remnant began to work on the house of the Lord. And just one month later, the Lord gave Haggai a second message for them. Many of the older people who had seen Solomon’s magnificent temple were discouraged by how small and unimpressive the new foundation looked. God understood their disappointment and spoke directly into it:
“Who of you is left who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not seem to you like nothing? But now be strong, Zerubbabel… Be strong, Joshua… Be strong, all you people of the land… and work. For I am with you,” declares the Lord Almighty. “This is what I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt. And my Spirit remains among you. Do not fear.”
Then came the astonishing promise:
“The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,” says the Lord Almighty. “And in this place I will grant peace,” declares the Lord Almighty.
This is the great theological insight we need today.
The people were looking at the size of the temple and feeling discouraged. God was looking at something far more important — His presence in the midst of His people. The glory of the temple was never ultimately about gold, cedar, or impressive architecture. It was about God dwelling with His people. And because God had promised to be with them, the future glory would actually surpass the past.
For us as Christians this is wonderfully encouraging. We can become discouraged when our church feels small, our efforts seem insignificant, or our personal spiritual life looks unimpressive compared to “the good old days.” But God does not measure by outward appearance. He measures by His own presence.
Wherever God is present by His Spirit, there is glory — even if it doesn’t look impressive to human eyes. And because Christ has come and the Holy Spirit now dwells in every believer, the glory of the new covenant far exceeds anything seen in the old temple. The “greater glory” Haggai pointed to has already begun in the Church, and it will reach its fullness when Jesus returns.
The repeated promise “I am with you” is the heartbeat of the passage. It was enough to stir the people to action. It was enough to calm their fears. It was enough to assure them that the best was yet to come.
Point to Ponder: God’s presence is more important than impressive results. When we know He is with us, we can keep working, keep trusting, and keep hoping — even when things look small or difficult.
Verse to Remember: “‘I am with you,’ declares the Lord Almighty.” (Haggai 2:4 ESV)
Question to Consider: Is there any area of your life or your church where you have become discouraged because things don’t look as impressive as they once did, or as you hoped they would? How would remembering God’s promise “I am with you” change the way you pray and the way you serve this week?
