The Lord My Helper

The Lord Is My Keeper – Psalm 121

Dear Friends, picture the rocky paths of ancient Israel winding through the hills. A traveller sets out on a long journey — perhaps heading to Jerusalem for one of the great festivals. The road is steep, the sun is hot, and dangers lurk: wild animals, bandits, sudden storms, or simply the weariness that comes from mile after mile on foot. As he lifts his eyes to the hills, the question rises in his heart: “Where does my help come from?”

The answer rings out with quiet confidence in Psalm 121:

“I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” (v. 1–2 ESV)

The psalmist doesn’t offer vague optimism. He points to the Creator Himself — the One who spoke the mountains into being, who hung the stars in place, and who watches over every detail of His people’s lives. He will not let your foot be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. (vv. 3–4)

The Lord is your keeper. He is the shade at your right hand, protecting you from the scorching sun by day and the moon by night. He will keep you from all evil; He will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore. (vv. 5–8)

This is no distant God. This is the personal, attentive Keeper of His people — the same God who watches over the nation of Israel also watches over you, step by step, day by day, journey by journey.

Today, many of us are on our own “journeys” — through uncertain seasons, health struggles, family pressures, or simply the daily grind that can feel exhausting. We lift our eyes to the hills of our worries, our plans, or our own strength… and we quickly realise they cannot keep us. But when we lift our eyes higher — to the Lord who made heaven and earth — we find help that never sleeps, never tires, and never fails.

Pause in the quiet today. Where are you tempted to look for help first — your own resources, other people, or circumstances? What would it look like this week to consciously lift your eyes to the Lord and trust Him as your Keeper? He is already watching over your coming and going. He is already shading you. He is already guarding your life — today and forever.

Point to Ponder: Real security isn’t found in removing every danger from the road; it is found in knowing the One who walks with us and never slumbers.

Verse to Remember: “My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121:2 ESV)

Question to Consider: This week, in one honest moment alone with God, name the “hill” you’ve been looking to for help or security. Then deliberately lift your eyes higher — what does it mean for you right now to trust the Lord as your Keeper?
