The Daily Word

There is so much ill feeling in the world today, there is rarely any good news, all we see is man against man and hatred within a nation and communities and outwardly from one nation to another. Human life means so little to so many people. The words ‘Do not kill’ seem to be easily ignored in the pursuit of ‘higher objectives’. Is this the world that God intended to be ideal world for humans to live in?? Man has turned it into a version of hell.

When sin entered the world, as we read in the book of Genesis, it did not take many years before in a fit of jealousy and anger, Cain murdered his own brother. But in love for mankind, God provided a way back from the awful consequences of sin by sending His own Son to pay the price for the sin of the world, once and for ever! He then showed the way forward for man by offering a simple road to a life of love and peace.

And it is that same love that we are thinking about at present and Paul’s description of what benefits the path of love can bring. Today we move on to one which in many ways is totally in contrast to the conditions we see around us in the world, “Love is not easily angered”. When we accept the Lord Jesus Christ as our Saviour, God, in the person of the Holy Spirit, gives us the power to not be controlled by the worst and basest human emotions. The ‘secret’ of that success is by allowing God to work in us, by giving Him, intentionally, control of our lives in all areas. A display of anger is not a display of love, and it is a fallacy to ever seek to describe it as ‘righteous anger’.

God wants us live in harmony with one another and Jesus fully propagated that by declaring in the Sermon on the Mount, “Love your enemies and do good to those who hate you”. There is no way round those words, and we can really treat them as a command from God.
