One Perfect Sacrifice

One Sacrifice for All Time – Hebrews 10:4-10
Dear Friends, the writer to the Hebrews takes us deep into the heart of the Old Testament sacrificial system. Year after year, on the Day of Atonement, the blood of bulls and goats was offered for the sins of the people. Yet the writer makes a startling statement:
“It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.” (v.4)
All those thousands of animals sacrificed over centuries could never fully deal with the guilt of sin. They could only cover it temporarily. They pointed forward, but they could not perfect those who drew near to God.
Then the writer lets us listen in on a conversation that took place in eternity, long before Bethlehem. Quoting Psalm 40, he records the words of the Son speaking to the Father:
“Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired,
but a body you have prepared for me…
Behold, I have come to do your will, O God.” (vv.5-7)
Here is the wonder of the gospel. The Lord Jesus Christ did not come primarily to offer another sacrifice — He came to be the sacrifice. The animal offerings were never enough. What God really wanted was perfect obedience, and only One could offer that: His own beloved Son.
So when Jesus entered the world, He came with a heart fully surrendered: “I have come to do your will.” And that will meant offering His own body once for all on the cross.
The writer then draws the glorious conclusion:
“And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” (v.10)
One perfect life. One perfect sacrifice. One offering that never needs to be repeated. Because of Jesus, the work is finished. We are made holy — not by our own efforts or repeated religious acts, but by His single, sufficient sacrifice.
Today we can stop striving. We can stop trying to earn what has already been given. The blood of bulls and goats could never take away sins, but the blood of Jesus has done what they never could.
Today, pause in the quiet. Are you still trying to make yourself acceptable to God through your own efforts, religious routines, or good behaviour? Or have you rested fully in the “once for all” offering of Jesus Christ?
Point to Ponder: The old sacrifices could only cover sin; Jesus’ sacrifice removes it completely and forever.
Verse to Remember: “And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” (Hebrews 10:10 ESV)
Question to Consider: This week, take a moment to ask yourself: In what area of my life am I still trying to earn God’s favour instead of resting in the finished work of Christ? What would it look like to live this week trusting fully in His “once for all” sacrifice?
