Being Honest with God

When the Pressure is On – Jeremiah 20:10-13
Dear Friends, Jeremiah is in a very dark place. He has been faithful to God’s call, but his message of coming judgment has made him deeply unpopular. His own friends and neighbours are whispering against him. He hears their plots:
“I hear many whispering,‘Terror on every side!Denounce him! Let’s denounce him!’All my friends are waiting for me to slip.‘Perhaps he will be deceived;then we can overcome himand take our revenge on him.’” (v.10)The pressure is intense. The man who once spoke boldly for God now feels surrounded by betrayal and threat. Even those closest to him are watching for him to fall so they can destroy him.
Yet in the middle of this despair, Jeremiah does something remarkable. He turns his eyes upward and declares:
“But the Lord is with me like a mighty warrior;so my persecutors will stumble and not prevail. They will fail and be thoroughly disgraced;their dishonour will never be forgotten.” (v.11)Then comes this beautiful outburst of praise and trust:“Sing to the Lord!Give praise to the Lord!He rescues the life of the needyfrom the hands of the wicked.” (v.13)
Even when everything around him feels like “terror on every side,” Jeremiah remembers the character of God. He is not abandoned. The Lord is still his mighty warrior. The same God who called him is still able to rescue him.
This passage is deeply honest. It shows us that God’s servants can feel overwhelmed, betrayed, and afraid. Jeremiah doesn’t pretend to be strong — he pours out his pain. He doesn’t stay in despair. He chooses to declare God’s faithfulness even when he can’t see it with his eyes.
Today we may not face the same plots as Jeremiah, but many of us know what it is like to feel surrounded by criticism, opposition, or disappointment. In those moments the temptation is to withdraw, to become bitter, or to stop speaking what is true.
Jeremiah shows us a better way: Bring the pain honestly to God, then lift your eyes and sing His praise anyway.
Today, pause in the quiet. Where are you feeling “terror on every side” right now — perhaps in relationships, work, church life, or your own heart? Will you, like Jeremiah, choose to declare that the Lord is still your mighty warrior?
Point to Ponder: Even when God’s servants feel surrounded by enemies, they are never abandoned. The Lord remains a mighty warrior on their behalf.
Verse to Remember: “But the Lord is with me like a mighty warrior…” (Jeremiah 20:11 ESV)
Question to Consider: This week, in one honest moment with God, name the area where you feel most pressured or opposed. Then deliberately speak out loud (or write down) a declaration of God’s faithfulness in that situation. How does choosing to praise Him change the way you face the pressure?
