Until God gave the Law to Moses, there was little structure to the worship of God and the guidance of man’s behaviour. Then the Law was given, based on the 10 Commandments and at last there was a structure and a code of living. If man could obey the Law, then God promised eternal life. But because there was no way man could consistently obey and follow the Law, there was a system of sacrifices instituted, which appeared on the outside to be a form of payment to God for sins committed, to bring the giver of the sacrifice back into God’s favour and to restore a permanent relationship with God.
But, and it is a big but, because this was physical in nature, it didn’t have to be spiritual. Even in the Old Testament, the prophets could condemn the people for just going through the motions although their heart was far from in tune with God and the book of Hebrews finally concludes that all the sacrifices and ceremony could never take away sin. But Hebrews pointed to the sacrifice of Jesus being so much better and so effective that ”there remains no more sacrifice for sin”. As we have found out since putting our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and given Him our hearts, the one sacrifice upon the cross has paid the debt of the sin of the whole world for ever!!!
How blessed we are!! God does not ask for physical work and activity, but He does ask for our whole being, that is our hearts and minds first and then the offering of our bodies as a living sacrifice. I was thinking yesterday morning of that song, “With my whole heart I will praise Him, holding nothing back”. That is the only way to a fulfilling life because Jesus Christ truly is at the centre.
