I was thinking about when the Lord set up the Breaking of Bread feast and about the first time. The Disciples were sent on the Lord’s instructions to prepare for celebrating the Passover feast. They were to given instructions that would lead them to ‘a large Upper Room, furnished and there make ready’. I don’t think there was anything spiritually special about this room, but I certainly like the idea of an ‘upper room’. This was not to be conducted secretly in a cellar or basement, this was large and furnished and an ‘upper room. Here was a suitable place for the initiation of the Lord’s Supper, but only Jesus knew what was going to take place.
The other thing that Jesus said to His Disciples was to ‘make ready’. There was preparation involved. The bread and wine, by then it must have been an integral part of celebrating the Passover, was available and it only needed the Lord to be present to complete the preparations.
In like manner, we are to prepare for meeting the Lord about His Table. The bread and wine, though absolutely essential to the Feast are only there to help us to meet the Lord and to experience His presence and power. Paul had much to say about preparing ourselves to meet the Lord around His Table, most of it condemning a casual and spiritually blind approach to meeting the Lord and particularly clearing our own hearts of negative and worldly concerns. After all we are meeting our King, our Saviour, and our Lord. Should we not be in a spiritually-fit condition for that meeting? ‘What if with eyes that are blind and dim, we see the signs but see not Him?’
