The Great Physician

The Doctor is In – Luke 5:27-32
Dear Friends, imagine the scene. Levi (who we know better as Matthew) is sitting at his tax booth — the most hated man in town. He’s a collaborator with Rome, lining his own pockets while his neighbours groan under heavy taxes. Socially untouchable. Spiritually radioactive.
And Jesus walks straight up to him and says two simple words: “Follow me.”
No sermon. No conditions. No “clean yourself up first.” Just “Follow me.”
And Levi does. He leaves everything — the money, the power, the security — and throws a massive party in his own house. Who does he invite? All his old friends: other tax collectors and “sinners.” The kind of crowd that made religious people cross the street.
The Pharisees are horrified. They mutter to the disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”
Jesus overhears and gives them the most beautiful answer in the Bible:
“Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” (v.31-32)
Church, this is the heartbeat of the gospel.
Jesus didn’t come for the people who think they’ve got it all together. He came for the messed-up, the messed-over, the moral failures, the ones who know they’re sick. He still does.
The scandal is this: the Doctor makes house calls to the very people the “healthy” want to keep at arm’s length. And when He shows up, He doesn’t just heal — He eats with them. He celebrates with them. He turns their mess into a party because the Great Physician has arrived.
Be honest with yourself. Are you sitting in the “I’m basically a good person” seat, or have you realised you’re in the “I’m sick and I need a Doctor” seat? The beautiful thing is — both seats are welcome at Jesus’ table. The only difference is that the ones who know they’re sick get to enjoy the feast.
Point to Ponder: Jesus doesn’t wait for us to get better before He eats with us. He eats with us so we can get better.
Verse to Remember: “I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” (Luke 5:32 ESV)
Question to Consider: Who in your life feels like the “tax collector” — the one everyone else has written off? What would it look like this week for you to do what Jesus did: simply say “Follow me” and then sit down and eat with them?
