Jesus Is Here

The Bridegroom is Here – Matthew 9:14-15
Dear Friends, one ordinary day the disciples of John the Baptist came to Jesus with a genuine question: “Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”
It was a fair question. Fasting was serious business — a sign of repentance, devotion, and hunger for God. John’s followers were fasting. The Pharisees were fasting twice a week. But Jesus’ disciples? They were eating, laughing, and enjoying life like they were at a party. What was going on?
Jesus didn’t give them a new rule. He gave them a picture of joy: “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.”
Jesus is saying, “I am the Bridegroom. I have come for My bride. This is not a time for long faces and empty stomachs — this is a time for celebration!”
The presence of Jesus turns mourning into feasting.
But He also looks ahead with gentle honesty: the day is coming when the Bridegroom will be taken away. He’s pointing quietly to the cross — the dark hours when He would be arrested, crucified, and laid in the tomb. In that moment, fasting and mourning would be completely appropriate.
We live in the beautiful tension between those two realities. Jesus has risen and is with us by His Spirit right now — so joy is always possible. Yet we still wait for the day when He returns in full glory and the wedding feast begins forever.
Today, pause.
Are you living like the Bridegroom is in the room? Or are you still carrying the weight of mourning, as if He’s far away?
Let the truth sink in: the Bridegroom is here. Right now. In this ordinary moment. In your ordinary life. And because He is here, there is always reason for joy — even when the fast days come.
Point to Ponder: The presence of Jesus changes the atmosphere of every room — and every heart.
Verse to Remember: “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them?” (Matthew 9:15 ESV)
Question to Consider: In what part of your life right now are you living more like you’re in mourning than at a wedding feast with Jesus? What would shift if you truly believed the Bridegroom is with you today?
