Is Not Life More Than Food?

Do Not Be Anxious - Matthew 6:25-end

Dear Friends, Jesus sits on the hillside, looking into faces worn by daily cares, and says something startlingly direct: “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?” (v25).

He points to the birds—they neither sow nor reap, yet the Father feeds them. He points to the lilies—they neither toil nor spin, yet even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of them. “If God so clothes the grass of the field… will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?” (vv28–30).

Then comes the heart of it: “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble” (vv33–34).

Jesus isn’t promising a trouble-free life—He knows tomorrow will bring its own worries. He’s promising something better: that when our deepest desire is the kingdom and His righteousness, the Father takes care of the rest. Anxiety shrinks when God is our first treasure. Worry loses its grip when we remember we belong to a Father who never forgets His children.

Today, pause and let those birds and lilies preach to you. Look at your own hands—full of yesterday’s burdens and tomorrow’s fears—and hear Jesus say, “Do not be anxious.” Bring every worry to Him right now. Seek first His kingdom, and watch how He quietly, faithfully adds everything you truly need.

Point to Ponder: Worry is what happens when we forget who our Father is and what He has promised. Seeking Him first is what sets us free.

Verse to Remember: “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33 ESV)

Question to Consider: What worry is stealing your peace right now? What would it look like today to lay it down and seek His kingdom first—just for this one day?
