Hear Me All of You

The Real Source of Defilement - Mark 7:14-23
Dear Friends, Jesus calls the crowd close and says something that must have made jaws drop: “Hear me, all of you, and understand: There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him” (vv14–15).
Later, in private with the disciples, He spells it out even plainer: “Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him…?” (v18). Food goes in, passes through the stomach, comes out the other end—none of it touches the heart. But then He lists what does defile: evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. “All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person” (v23).
The Pharisees were obsessed with external rules—washing hands, pots, cups, the right rituals. Jesus says those things are secondary at best. The real pollution isn’t on your hands or your plate; it’s in your heart. What bubbles up when no one’s watching? What spills out when you’re angry, stressed, or alone? That’s the true measure of cleanness before God.
This isn’t just ancient hygiene advice. It’s a mirror. Jesus is telling us the gospel isn’t about polishing the outside while the inside rots. Real change starts in the heart—where only He can reach. The list in verses 21–22 isn’t there to shame us; it’s there to show us why we need a new heart. And praise God, that’s exactly what He promises: “I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you” (Ezekiel 36:26). The cross didn’t just wash our hands—it dealt with the poison inside.
Today, pause and let Jesus ask you the question He asked the disciples: “Are you also without understanding?” (v18). Look honestly at what’s coming out of your heart lately—your words, your thoughts, your secret attitudes. Don’t clean up the outside to hide the inside. Bring the mess to Him. He’s the only One who can purify what no amount of rules or rituals ever could.
Point to Ponder: External religion can make you look clean; only Jesus can make you clean where it really matters.
Verse to Remember: “For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts… All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.” (Mark 7:21, 23 ESV)
Question to Consider: What “evil thing” has been coming out of your heart lately—anger, envy, pride, deceit? Will you bring it to Jesus today and let Him replace it with His grace?
