When Life Feels Unfair

When Life Feels Unfair, God Is Still Faithful
Dear Friends, life doesn’t always feel fair, does it? Sometimes the very things we long for most seem withheld, while others around us appear to have it all. In the opening verses of 1 Samuel, we meet a godly man named Elkanah who faithfully worships the Lord year after year. Yet in his own home, there is deep sorrow.
Elkanah has two wives: Peninnah, who has many children, and Hannah, whom he loves deeply—but Hannah is barren. The Lord has closed her womb, and Peninnah uses that pain to provoke and irritate her relentlessly. Year after year, during their family trips to Shiloh to sacrifice to the Lord, the taunting continues until Hannah weeps and cannot even eat.
Even Elkanah’s loving words—“Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?”—don’t fully ease her hurt. His affection is real, his double portion of the sacrifice is a sign of his devotion, but it cannot fill the empty place in her heart.
Here’s the profound truth: God sees every tear, every unspoken ache, and every moment of unfairness. Hannah’s barrenness wasn’t random cruelty; it was part of a greater story God was writing. The same God who closed her womb would later open it in His perfect timing, giving her a son called Samuel—a prophet who would anoint kings and shape Israel’s future. What looked like a dead end was actually divine preparation.
In our own lives, we may face seasons where others seem blessed while we wait, wonder, or weep. The pain is real, and it’s okay to bring it honestly to God. But don’t miss this: faithfulness in the waiting matters. Elkanah kept going to worship. Hannah kept showing up, even in tears. And God was at work behind the scenes.
When life feels unfair, remember that God’s delays are not denials. He is writing a story bigger than our current chapter—one that will bring glory to Him and good to us. Trust Him with your deepest longings. He sees you, He loves you, and He is faithful.
Point to Ponder: God is faithful even when life feels unfair.
Verse to Remember: “Hannah, why are you weeping? … Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?” (1 Samuel 1:8 NIV) – A gentle reminder that God’s love and presence are greater than any earthly lack.
Question to Consider: What longing or unfair situation are you carrying today, and how can you choose to keep faithfully showing up to worship God in the midst of it?
