When God Looks Deeper

God Looks at the Heart
Dear Friends, have you ever felt overlooked? Passed over for someone taller, louder, more impressive on the outside? Or perhaps you’ve been the one doing the overlooking, judging by appearances rather than character? In 1 Samuel 16:1–13, we find Samuel caught in that very human trap—and God gently, firmly, correcting him.
The Lord sends Samuel to Bethlehem to anoint the next king from among Jesse’s sons. One by one, the young men are paraded before the prophet. Eliab, the eldest, is striking—tall, strong, kingly in every outward way. Samuel thinks, “Surely this is the Lord’s anointed.” But God says, “No. Do not consider his appearance or his height… The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7)
Seven sons pass by. Seven times God says, “Not this one.” Finally, Jesse mentions the youngest, David, out tending the sheep—almost an afterthought. And when David arrives, ruddy, handsome, but unremarkable next to his brothers, the Lord declares, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”
What a comfort. What a challenge. God is never swayed by the CV, the clothes, the confidence, or the crowd’s applause. He sees straight to the heart—the hidden motives, the quiet faithfulness, the tender worship offered in the fields when no one is watching. He chose David not because he looked the part, but because his heart was already turned towards Him.
And the same God who bypassed the obvious choices to raise up a shepherd boy still chooses unlikely people today. He delights in hearts that are soft towards Him, even if the world counts them small.
Today, pause and let Him search yours. Are there places where you’re striving to look impressive rather than simply being faithful? Are you measuring others—or yourself—by outward standards instead of grace?
Point to Ponder: God is never impressed by appearances; He is captivated by hearts that are wholly His.
Verse to Remember: “But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height… The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’” (1 Samuel 16:7 NIVUK)
Question to Consider: Where might you be tempted to judge (or be discouraged) by outward appearance—your own or someone else’s—when God is inviting you to trust His heart-seeing gaze?
