The Heavens Open

The Moment Everything Changed in Matthew 3:13-17

Friends, there’s a quiet, holy scene in Matthew 3 that still takes my breath away every time I read it. Jesus, the sinless Son of God, steps into the Jordan River to be baptised by John. John protests—“I need to be baptised by you, and do you come to me?”—but Jesus gently insists: “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfil all righteousness.”

And then heaven itself breaks open.

As Jesus comes up from the water, the skies part, the Spirit of God descends like a dove and rests on Him, and a voice from heaven declares: “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

This is the Father’s public affirmation of the Son. It’s the moment the Trinity is revealed in perfect harmony: the Son submitting in obedience, the Spirit descending in anointing, the Father speaking in delight. Jesus didn’t need cleansing—He was already perfect—but He stepped into the water anyway, identifying completely with us, taking His place among sinners, beginning the journey that would lead Him to the cross.

For us, this passage is an invitation to pause and marvel. The same Spirit who rested on Jesus lives in every believer. The same Father who said “This is my Son, whom I love” says over you, through Christ, “You are my beloved child.” And the same obedient Saviour who fulfilled all righteousness has fulfilled it for us too—His perfect life credited to ours.

Let’s make this our prayer today. Thank the Father for sending His beloved Son to identify with us, to take our place, and to open heaven wide. Ask the Holy Spirit to rest afresh on you—filling you with power, peace, and purpose. And surrender any area where you’ve been resisting God’s call to obedience, trusting that His righteousness covers you completely.

In this new year, may we live as beloved children—secure in the Father’s delight, led by the Spirit, and following the Son who stepped into our story so we could step into His.

Point to Ponder: Jesus didn’t need baptism—He chose it to identify with us. That same humility and love now covers every part of our lives.

Verse to Remember: “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” — Matthew 3:17

Question to Consider: Where in your life today is Jesus inviting you to step into obedience, trusting that His righteousness is already yours?
