The Daily Word

Just continuing our thoughts on what is new when we come to know Jesus as our Saviour, Denise reminded us last night about the importance of trusting God, because without a strong trust IN Him, our lives cannot be lived FOR Him. The Bible tells us not to put our trust ‘in princes’, reminding us that the best of men is just man at his best. So trust is the key characteristic that will determine our strength of relationship with God.
But what is new about our relationship with other people, particularly our brothers and sisters in Christ? Well in John 13, Jesus says, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another”. We may have read that many times in the past and perhaps felt a warm feeling in our hearts about the goodness of love. But what does it mean to really love our brothers and sisters? Well, Jesus here is not talking specifically about romantic love, that has its place. But we need to look at 1 Corinthians 13 for the practical application of love as Jesus intended in those brief words.
Again, as we mentioned on Wednesday, make a checklist of the requirements of real heart love that are contained there and then ensure that we practice them towards ALL our brothers and sisters in Christ throughout this year and indeed our lives. And as we practice them towards those we know, then we will find that same love flowing out towards those we don’t know who also need the love of God shed abroad in their lives.
The other notable word in Jesus statement is “commandment”. To show love to others is not optional, it is not selective, it is a commandment and if we fail to obey a commandment of our Lord and Saviour, then we are sinning against God. It is an order, it is our life, it is our pathway to love one another.
If we can take the requirement to trust our God and to love one another into 2026, there is no limit to the blessing God will pour into our lives as we grow in the knowledge of Him.
