Listening for God

When God Calls Your Name in the Night

Dear Friends, have you ever felt like God was silent? Like the heavens were quiet and the spiritual air was dry? You’re not alone. In 1 Samuel 3, we meet a young boy named Samuel serving in the temple under Eli the priest. The Bible tells us, “In those days the word of the Lord was rare; there were not many visions.” The spiritual climate was barren. People were going through religious motions, but few were truly hearing from God.

Then, one night, everything changed. Samuel was lying down in the temple when the Lord called his name: “Samuel!” He ran to Eli, thinking the old priest had summoned him. Three times this happened—three times Samuel hurried to Eli’s side, only to be told, “I did not call; go back and lie down.”

On the fourth call, Eli finally understood. He instructed the boy, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went back, heart pounding, and when the voice came again—“Samuel! Samuel!”—he answered just as Eli had taught him. And God spoke. Not a long sermon, not a dramatic vision—just a personal, direct word that would shape Samuel’s entire life and the future of Israel.

From that night on, “Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established as a prophet of the Lord.”

Here’s the beautiful truth for us today: God still calls. He still speaks. And He often does it in the quiet, ordinary moments when we least expect it. The problem isn’t that God has gone silent; it’s that we’ve stopped listening. We fill our lives with noise—screens, schedules, worries—and wonder why we can’t hear His voice.

Samuel’s simple response changed everything: “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” No demands, no conditions, no long explanations—just humble, open-hearted availability. That’s the posture God honours. He doesn’t shout over the chaos; He waits for us to quiet our souls and say, “I’m listening.”

Today, wherever you are—maybe in the middle of a noisy season or a quiet night—pause and ask: Am I listening for God’s voice? Have I told Him, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening”? When we do, He will speak. Maybe not with audible words, but through His Word, through wise counsel, through a gentle nudge in your spirit, through circumstances that suddenly make sense. And when He does, He’ll use you just as He used Samuel—to bring His truth to a world that desperately needs it.

Point to Ponder: God is still speaking; the question is whether we are listening.

Verse to Remember: “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” (1 Samuel 3:10 NIV) – A simple, powerful prayer that opens the door to hearing God’s voice.

Question to Consider: What noise or busyness in your life might be drowning out God’s call? What would it look like today to quiet your heart and say, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening”?
