The Daily Word

When we consider, as much as we can comprehend, the character of God, and in particular His complete holiness and perfection, we sometimes wonder how He can allow such imperfect human beings, like us, to even exist. If God’s character only consisted of holiness, then we certainly would not! But we read in John’s letters that “God is love”, and that characteristic is the reason we do exist. We are grateful that God balances His holiness and His love and that was perfectly expressed when Jesus, His Son, died on the cross bearing the punishment of our sin.

But that is not the only result of this balancing of character, what is crucial to us is the constant display of God’s mercy. A lovely verse in 1 Corinthians 1 says this, “Blessed be God ….. the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort”. The balancing of love and holiness and the death and resurrection of Jesus produces mercy to us. Despite our inability to worship and serve God as he should be, God constantly shows us mercy, again because He sees us not just a failed human beings, but He sees us in the righteousness of His Son and therefore His wrath is not poured out upon us.

Much of the time, we are so concerned with our own lives and what we want that we never think of God’s mercy but we only live because of God’s mercy so let us continually thank Him for not giving us what we truly deserve and for the positive display of His mercy and comfort in our lives.
