The Virgin Birth: Essential Truth of the Incarnation... As we approach another Christmas season, the world around us will flood the airwaves with sentimental songs, glittering lights, and stories of Santa Claus. But Scripture calls us to something far more profound: a sober, doctrinal contemplation of the miracle at the heart of Christmas—the virgin birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Matthew 1:18-25 and Luke 1:26-38 present this truth with unmistakable clarity. Mary, a virgin betrothed to Joseph, is found to be with child “by the Holy Spirit.” The angel Gabriel declares to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God” (Luke 1:35).

This is no optional detail or quaint legend. The virgin birth is an essential doctrine of the Christian faith for at least three critical reasons.

First, it affirms the full deity of Christ. If Jesus had been conceived through normal human means, He would have been merely human. But the Scriptures teach that He is the eternal Son of God who took on human flesh without ceasing to be God. The virgin birth safeguards the truth that in the womb of Mary, deity and humanity were inseparably united in one person forever.

Second, it protects the sinlessness of Christ. Every human descendant of Adam inherits a sin nature (Romans 5:12). Had Jesus been born of a human father, He would have inherited that fallen nature. But conceived by the Holy Spirit, He entered the world holy—without original sin, the only One qualified to be the spotless Lamb who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29; Hebrews 4:15).

Third, it fulfills Old Testament prophecy. Isaiah 7:14 explicitly states, “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” To deny the virgin birth is to deny the inerrancy of Scripture itself.

Joseph’s response models the obedience God requires of us. Confronted with what appeared to be scandal, he planned a quiet divorce. Yet when the angel commanded, “Do not fear to take Mary as your wife,” Joseph arose and obeyed without delay. His faith reminds us that true righteousness submits to God’s Word even when it defies human reasoning.

This Christmas, let us not be distracted by cultural traditions that obscure the truth. Let us proclaim with clarity and conviction the biblical doctrine of the virgin birth—the miraculous means by which God entered His creation to accomplish redemption.

The babe in the manger is none other than the eternal Son, the holy God-Man, the sinless Saviour. There is no gospel without Him.
