Have you ever had your life turned upside down by something completely unexpected? Maybe a surprise pregnancy, a job loss, or a relationship crisis that left you reeling? In Matthew 1:18-25, we meet Joseph, a good man with solid plans – engaged to Mary, ready to build a life together. But then comes the shock: Mary is pregnant, and it's not his child. Talk about a curveball from God.
Joseph was a righteous man, the Bible says. He could have exposed Mary publicly, which in that culture might have led to her stoning. Instead, he chooses mercy – planning a quiet divorce to spare her shame. But God has bigger plans. That night, an angel appears in a dream: “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
Let's unpack three life-changing truths from this passage that can transform how we handle our own interruptions.
God's Plans Often Interrupt Ours – and That's Okay. Joseph had it all figured out: marriage, family, a quiet carpenter's life. But God's interruption wasn't a mistake; it was an invitation to something eternal. The angel reminds Joseph of his lineage – “son of David” – linking him to the promised Messiah. Friends, when God disrupts your agenda, it's because He's aligning you with His bigger story. What “interruption” in your life might actually be God's redirection?
Obedience Requires Faith in the Impossible. The angel explains the virgin birth, fulfilling Isaiah's prophecy: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means God with us). Joseph wakes up and does exactly as commanded – he takes Mary home as his wife, no questions asked. No DNA tests, no social media polls – just raw faith. In our world of doubt and “prove it,” Joseph's story challenges us: Will we trust God when the facts seem impossible?
The Name “Jesus” Changes Everything. “You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” Jesus means “the Lord saves.” This baby isn't just a child; He's the Saviour the world desperately needs. Joseph's obedience makes him part of redemption's plan. Today, that same Jesus offers salvation to you – not through rules or rituals, but through simple faith in Him.
As we approach Christmas, let's learn from Joseph: embrace God's interruptions, step out in faith, and let Jesus' name redefine your life. Your plans might change, but His purpose never fails.
