The Daily Word

Jacob fathered 12 sons. In the course of his many times turbulent life, God changed his name to Israel, which became a deeply significant change, which persists as a country name to this day. The twelve sons became the founders of the 12 tribes and before he died, Jacob gave an individual blessing to each of his sons and guided by God, singled out the tribe of Judah as the one from whom Jesus, (or Shiloh as Jacob called him), would come. And Jacob followed that by a prophecy that has in part been fulfilled but is yet to be completely fulfilled when God’s rule extends over all the earth, “And to Him shall be the obedience of the people”.
We then move hundreds of years forward in time to Philippians 2, where Paul echoes the same thought, “At the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow”. But in the meanwhile, God is gathering a people to Himself who have already bowed the knee to Jesus. And we have found that His service is perfect freedom. Not freedom to do whatever we want but freedom from the slavery of sin. No longer are we bound totally by our sinful humanity, but by crowning Jesus as Saviour AND Lord, our hearts have been liberated, our minds opened and we have entered God’s kingdom.
The more we yield to our Saviour then the more we appreciate our new-found freedom and the words of the hymn come to us, “And we never can prove the delights of His love, until all on the altar we lay”. The challenge, but also the richness of blessing, is there for us to take!
