KOINE Greek - Busybody

That One Greek Word That Changes Everything
Have you ever met someone who is exhaustingly busy… but somehow never gets anything useful done? That’s exactly what the Apostle Paul nails with a single, rarely-used Greek word in 2 Thessalonians 3:11.
The verse says (in most English translations) that some in the church were “idle… busy-bodies.” But when you look at the original language, Paul is far more precise – and far more piercing.
The word he chooses is περιεργαζόμενοι (periergazomenoi).
- Ergazomai = to work, to labour, to be actively engaged.
- Peri (the prefix) = around, about, excessively, or in the wrong place.
Put them together and you get a brilliant, almost sarcastic picture: “working around” – people who are frantically busy, expending huge amounts of energy, but always in the wrong direction.
They’re not lazy in the couch-potato sense. They’re the ones stirring gossip, meddling in other people’s affairs, speculating about the end times instead of getting on with the tasks God has placed right in front of them.
- Scrolling endlessly on social media while the washing-up piles up.
- Debating fine points of prophecy while a lonely brother sits unnoticed at the back of the church.
- Rearranging the chairs for the hundredth time instead of actually praying with someone who is hurting.
Paul’s loving but firm correction is this: Stop working around the edges. Start working where it matters. The same energy that fuels gossip can fuel encouragement. The same hours spent doom-scrolling on social media can be given to visiting the sick or preparing a Bible study.
The same tongue that meddles can be used to bless, to teach, to comfort. Purpose-driven faith isn’t just about being busy – it’s about being busy with the right things, in the right place, for the right reason: the glory of Jesus and the good of His Body.
So here’s a simple challenge from 2 Thessalonians 3:11... This week, ask the Lord to show you one area where you’ve been periergazomai – working hard at the wrong things – and then redirect that energy into real Kingdom labour. Because one day soon we will stand before our Master, and He won’t be impressed with how frantically we worked "around" His priorities in the wrong places.
He’ll be looking for those faithful servants who worked "in" theright places for His Kingdom.
Let’s get to it, church family – the right work, in the right place, starting today.
