The Daily Word

The Book of Psalms, on its own, could almost provide enough basic guidance for us to live our Christian lives, despite being written hundreds of years before Jesus came to earth. The calls to praise and worship that it contains, if we followed them, would enhance our lives with joy in our salvation and our Saviour. Indeed, before hymnwriters appeared on the scene, the Psalms were the main source of vocal worship throughout the Middle Ages.

But not only is the Book of Psalms good for guiding our worship, it is also a Book which contains soul-baring honesty and even prophecy about the coming Saviour and events that haven’t even happened yet. But today I just want to consider part of one verse which is a prayer. The verse is found in Psalm 5 and is a plea we all need to pray, “Lead me, O Lord”. The verse acknowledges the character of God and our relationship with Him. It recognises our own incapacity to run our own lives successfully. It recognises the power and love that God has for His people.

It reminds me very much of Psalm 23 and a modern sheep farmer. I was watching a brief clip of a famer in a field of his sheep. They knew him and came up to him and would have followed him. But he needed to get the flock to another field, so he brought his sheep dog into play. Despite having probably seen the dog before, the dog didn’t lead the sheep, he drove them! That is the difference, God never drives us, His sheep, He leads us, and as we were thinking about faith earlier this week, then we trust Him to lead us.
