The Daily Word

I have just finished watching the News and if I was perhaps more sensitive in my emotions, I would be at this point, depressed. The only good news, at least as far as one particular section of the UK population is concerned, is that Scotland have qualified for the World Cup next year. The rest of the News could be described as either stressful or bad.

Maybe conditions today and world events are no different than in years past, but now, due to the boom in world-wide communications, we know much more about what is actually happening and none of it is good news. So when we read Paul’s exhortation In Romans 12 to “Be joyful in hope”, we have to look way beyond world events to something far more positive and personal. That hope that Paul refers to, is outside of all control of man and consists of at least 2 elements. One is that the Holy Spirit living and working in each one of those who have accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord, that He will do His work now to reproduce more of the character of our Saviour in each one of us. And as we were discussing last night at our Bible Study, the joy that comes when we are close to Him is something that no earthly experience can reproduce.

But the second reason to be joyful in hope, is that the Lord’s return to take us to be with Himself is so much nearer and world events only strengthen that hope as prophecy after prophecy is being fulfilled, all pointing to the imminent return of our Saviour. When Peter was walking on the water to go to Jesus, while ever he was looking at Jesus and his attention and focus was on Him, he was OK. When he looked away at his surroundings, he started to sink.

There is an old song we used to sing, and the message for us is clear today more than it was then, and it went like this, “Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in His wonderful face. And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace”
