Pray For Us That the Word May Run Swiftly
(Transcribed from Tuesday's Bible Study Group)
The evening kicked off with Brian announcing we’re almost at the end of 2 Thessalonians – just two or three weeks left. That sparked the big “What next?” conversation.
Brian’s open to anything New Testament (or even a topic on our hearts) for the new year – but Old Testament prophets are off the table for now (“a bit heavy!”). Timothy/Titus got a mention, but the floor’s wide open. If something’s on your heart, speak up soon – let Brian or Shaun know!
There was some light banter about Ezekiel – Brian joked he’s happy for us to read it, but Shaun quipped, “I don’t think there are many who’d tackle Ezekiel!” We all chuckled – no one’s volunteering for that one just yet.
Then we dived into chapter 3:1–6, with Brian reading from his faithful KJV-variation:
“Finally, brethren, pray for us that the word of the Lord may run swiftly and be glorified, just as it is with you, and that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men. For not all have faith, but the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one. And we have confidence in the Lord concerning you, both that you do and will do the things we command you. Now may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patience of Christ.”
Verse 6 got a teaser read too:
“But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition he received from us.”
Brian flagged “disorderly” as the key word in this verse, saying, "We take it one way today, but in the original Greek held may have held a different meaning."
Shaun’s bible version (the ESV) translated the original Greek as “idleness,” and there was talk of it being “idle and destructive” or simply “disruptive.” Brian decided we’re saving the full word study for next week – plenty to unpack there!
Paul’s Plea for Prayer
Brian emphasised Paul’s urgency for prayer in the letter with the words "pray for us." Paul’s not asking for personal easement, but that the gospel would have free course – “run swiftly” and glorify God, ending with a prayer that they be protected from “unreasonable and wicked men.”Paul, the veteran apostle, knew opposition inside out – after all he'd been run out of Thessalonica after just three weeks, then Berea (then on to Athens). Prior to all that he'd been beaten in Philippi after a miracle stirred trouble. Yet he still needed the church’s prayers.
Brian quoted Spurgeon: “You cannot tell how much God’s servants are helped by the prayers of His people.” Why pray? So the word goes out unhindered. Brian tied it to Isaiah 55:11 – "God’s word will not return void" – but we’re called to pray in faith for His glory, not ours. Selfish prayer falls flat; prayer for God’s name to be honoured is the key.
Shaun added: “If it’s selfish, it won’t be answered. It has to be in accordance with God’s will and honour Him.” Even the Lord’s Prayer starts with “Thy will be done” (Matthew 6:10).
Brian recalled Paul’s thorn in the flesh (2 Corinthians 12:7–9) – God said no, “My grace is sufficient for you.”
Dave chimed in: “Do we sometimes fear to ask? We say to each other, ‘Why didn’t you ask for help?’ Do we do the same with the Lord?”
Shaun quoted James 4:2–3: “You do not have because you do not ask… and you ask wrongly.”
God’s Sovereignty and Providence
Brian stressed: God is sovereign – His word will accomplish its purpose. But we pray believing, asking Him to perform it for His glory, not church numbers or ease.Shaun’s Prison Ministry Testimony
Shaun brought it home with his prison ministry story. After 5–6 years working smoothly as a prison Chaplain, the last six months I've felt like my ministry has been hitting a brick wall – I've been struggling to get onto the wings... failed to get more working hours... been asked not to follow biblical scripture... every attempt to serve blocked. Once I was told "You don’t have the right qualifications”, as if Peter had that problem! (In Shaun's words... he was being blocked by “wicked and unreasonable men” – Muslims trying to stop Christian pastoral work.)Shaun said we’ve been praying as a group on a Tuesday evening for God’s direction in this matter, until eventually Shaun said he felt like Paul being stopped from entering Bithynia by the Holy Spirit. Shaun then asked God for a clear sign of what to do and got Isaiah 52:11 (“Depart, depart, go out from there, touch no unclean thing”). He handed in his notice the next day…
Two weeks later the whole Christian outreach inside prison was stopped by the Muslim Managing Chaplain. Suddenly, ex-prisoners are being referred to Shaun on the outside because Shaun no longer works for the Prison Service so can't be stopped like the other Chaplains from undertaking this outreach work.
Shaun explained that he's meeting an ex-prisoner called Nick on Monday for coffee, where he'll offer spiritual guidance and support. God repositioned Shaun with contacts intact, uncontrolled by the Prison Service... “Wicked men tried to block God’s work – but they won’t outsmart Him if we pray and follow what He wants.”
Kevin’s Input on Schools
Kevin shared similar challenges in school youth work – “Schools are getting worse now than ever.” Kevin has hit his own brick walls in the past trying to get Christian values into schools. Why, because Satan doesn’t want Christian values being taught to children or prisoners...Shaun said: “Satan doesn’t change his tactics does he– it’s a variation on ‘stop the word getting out.’" But verse 3 says “the Lord is faithful; He will establish you and guard you from the evil one. We have confidence we’ll do what’s commanded..." – Let's glorify Jesus.
Brian on Esther and Trust
These words encourage us – when things seem stalled, God’s working behind the scenes. Like Esther: God’s name not mentioned, but His providence is everywhere. We may not understand as the hyms tells us – “I am not skilled to understand what God has willed, what God has planned; I only know at His right hand stands One who is my Saviour.”Closing Prayer and Post-Study Chat
Dave closed in prayer, thanking God for the time, His word, and safe travels home.Post-study Reflection
Dave shared a travel testimony: On a trip, a seat mix-up led to meeting a depressed lady from Huddersfield. They took her under their wing, shared meals, cheered her up and it turned out she was a Christian – leaving them with a thank you card at the end of the trip. The lady even bought them a bag of chocolate buttons!God’s unexpected encounters bringing blessing indeed!
Shaun shared a thought: “Why does God need us? He could do it better – but He chooses to use us.”
Brian replied: “Serving gives us pleasure – not selfishly, but the buzz of being in His will.”
Shaun gave an illustration from John Piper a famous American evangelistic. John compared the love for God to a husband and wife relationship... one where the husband (in this case the church) gives his wife a bouquet of roses – her face shines, as she says, “Thank you!” You reflect that joy back. And it's the same with worship: We say “I love You, Lord” – God’s glorified, and He radiates joy, which reflects back on His Church, so we are glorified in God's own glory. Self-fulfilling really– we feed into Him, He into us, we grow.
Isn't that idea the bride (Church) and bridegroom (Christ) – dovetailing perfectly.

Final Reflection
From Paul’s plea to Shaun’s prison story and Dave’s trip – God’s word won’t be stopped. Pray for it to run swiftly, for His glory. God is faithful, even when we don’t see the full picture. Untill next week – bring those study ideas! 🙏Article written by Shaun Fereday, Leader @SFGH Church based on the transcript.
