The Daily Word

“I am the bread of life” is the first of Jesus ‘I am’ statements in John’s Gospel. As with many of Jesus’ statements, Jesus put spiritual meaning on physical events and circumstances that were occurring or had just occurred. When He was thirsty and He met the woman of Samaria at the well, He drew the comparison between physical water and the eternal and spiritual refreshment He could provide. Prior to making this statement He had fed the 5000 and having seen this miracle the crowd were now hungry again and wanted more of the same.
So He gently guided them to what was vastly more important than satisfying physical hunger because after a while physical food would have to be consumed again. The Disciples must have been quite stunned as He used the words “I am…” and their minds would be taken to Yahweh and the claim of Jesus to be God.
They would also perhaps have thought of the manna God provided on the Wilderness journey, which had to be gathered daily to satisfy physical hunger and the choice of ‘bread’ that Jesus used to refer to Himself, the most basic staple food, was also significant.
Jesus is the bread that gives spiritual life and that life is eternal. As we also ‘feed’ on Him daily, He continues to satisfy our spiritual needs. Those who believe in Jesus have real life, abundant life and we have proved that over and over again. Jesus provides, and is, the bread of life everlasting.
