The Daily Word

There is a saying, ‘ There are 2 things certain in life, death and taxes!” Looking round at the condition of the world today, in virtually every area of life, I would add a 3rd to that brief list and that is “change”!

Over the last 50 years, and still climbing exponentially, is technological change. We talk about and see the evidence of climate change. And social change, and what is acceptable socially, has changed dramatically and not always for the better.

I am just about past the age of adapting to change but it is now almost forced on us. I will have to change my mobile phone within the next year, because there are certain functions, such as parking charges, that I won’t be able to make if I don’t. I ask myself regularly, whatever happened to cash?

In the midst of this rapid and sometimes bewildering torrent of change, we look for some elements of stability and constantness and we find it in the Bible. In Mark 13, Jesus said “Heaven and earth shall pass away but my words shall not pass away”. Jesus’ words are as fresh and relevant today as they were 2000 years ago. For instance, Jesus said, “Come unto me all you that labour and I will give you rest”. Those words are timeless because they are based on the eternal and changeless character of God. But they also describe the most beneficial change that can happen to a person. To be “in” the Lord Jesus Christ, to receive His rest from the power of sin, and that is a change we all need. To develop the habit of ‘coming to Him’ in prayer and communion will give us rest for our souls.

So, not all change is bad but in the Bible we find all the change we need!
