The Daily Word
The conclusion of John 3 v 16 is by far, for those of us who are Christians, the most joyous part of the verse. We rejoice in God’s love for us but that meant that Jesus had to go to the cross, so our rejoicing is tinged with sorrow because we realise to an extent what Jesus had to pass through.
We have seen how that simple faith is what God requires of us for forgiveness of sin and yesterday we saw that the righteous and just result of NOT exercising faith is an eternal separation from God without any hope of reprieve in what the Bible calls the ‘second death’.
But the conclusion of the verse is certainly something that we never anticipated when we came to God for sin forgiveness, and it goes like this, “…….should not perish but have eternal life”. Not only has God saved us from the punishment that our sin deserves, but which Jesus bore instead, that is a blessing in itself. BUT we have been promised, and indeed we have been already given eternal life. This is not something just for the future when we die physically, that God steps in and awards us eternal life, Our eternal soul has been saved from eternal punishment and instead we have God’s life in us now through the gift of the Holy Spirit. God sees us clothed with Jesus’ righteousness and because He is eternal, then we have that same life in us now. All the blessings God can give, because of our faith, we have access to now. How joyful is that ! Hallelujah, what a Saviour!!!!
