Remembering with Hope Those in Prison

HMP Wealstun Memorial Mass

YOUR PRAYS WILL BE WELCOME.

On Thursday 18 September, the Christian Chaplaincy team at HMP Wealstun will hold a Memorial Mass to remember those who have died in custody while battling addiction.

Shaun who visits HMP Wealstun as a Sessional Chaplain on behalf of our Chapel says this will be a deeply meaningful service—a time to mourn, to honour each life lost, and to pray for comfort and healing: for families, for friends, and for those still living with the daily struggle of addiction inside the prison.

The service will be led by Father David (Anglican Priest), with Sue (Anglican Chaplain) supporting in prayer. Together they will lead both men serving a sentence and the staff who care for them through the gentle rhythm of prayer, Scripture, and song.
God’s Word will be read aloud as a reminder of His promises:
  • From Isaiah 25 – “He will swallow up death forever; the Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces.”
  • From 1 John 3 – “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God.”
  • From the Gospel of Matthew 11:28 – Jesus invites every weary heart: “Come to me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Addiction is one of the cruel tools the enemy uses to steal and destroy. Scripture warns, “Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8).

But the final word is not despair. The same Bible also declares, “The Son of God appeared to destroy the works of the devil” (1 John 3:8).

The Cross of Christ stands over every dark prison cell, proclaiming that sin and death will not have the last say.

Please pray for Father David, Sue, and the entire Christian Chaplaincy Team as they lead this service:

Pray for the men who will attend,

For those still caught in addiction’s grip,

And for the officers who serve them daily.

May the Lord use this memorial to bring comfort, hope, and the quiet assurance that “the Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).
