Artwork with a Story
A Lost Sheep, A Loving Shepherd 🐑✝️
This past Sunday at our Family Service, we were given a real treat. Brian Preston shared his testimony (which you can watch on our YouTube channel), and alongside it, he used a set of hand-drawn illustrations that carried both spiritual weight and a touch of nostalgia. These weren’t just any drawings—they were lovingly created by Sandra, Brian’s wife, more than 40 years ago when she was working with children.
The artwork is big and bold, all drawn on A3 sheets of paper, and they brought Jesus’ parable of the lost sheep (Luke 15:3–7) vividly to life. The story, of course, is simple yet profound: a shepherd leaves his 99 sheep to go after the one that’s wandered off. It’s a picture of God’s relentless love for each of us—that none are too lost, too far gone, or too insignificant to be pursued by Him.What made these illustrations so captivating wasn’t just their age or their size, but their heart. You could see the sheep lost in the wilderness, the shepherd scanning the hills, crawling through thickets, searching every valley, determined not to give up. And then came the wonderful final image—probably the one that stuck with everyone the most: the shepherd diving head-first into water to rescue the stranded sheep. It’s dramatic, even a little humorous, but it drives the point home beautifully. That’s the kind of love our Shepherd has for us—willing to go to any length, even plunging into the depths, to save the one that is lost.
It was moving to see how something drawn decades ago, for children’s ministry, still has the power to speak so clearly today. The gospel doesn’t get old. God’s Word doesn’t fade. And stories like the lost sheep remind us that each of us has been pursued and rescued by the Good Shepherd Himself.
So, next time you see these images, don’t just see ink and paper. See a reminder: you matter to God. He knows your name. He knows where you are. And if you’ve wandered, He’s already on His way to bring you home.
