Thought for the Day

We don’t always appreciate the good things in life. In physical terms, sometimes we are so keen to get something which we think is better, a better car, a better job, a better house, that we lose sight of what we have already. This I suppose is natural human ambition, which is always strongest when we are young. As we get older perhaps we temper our ambition as we realise we are chasing a rainbow.
In spiritual terms, what is our ambition? We touched on last week that we should ‘grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ’. Is that our chief ambition? Unlike human ambition which wanes as we get older, this ambition can grow stronger and should grow stronger as we get older.
Why should this be the case? Why have this ambition at all? Well it all depends upon our appreciation of who God is and what God has done. We are in a much better spiritual position that the patriarchs in the Old Testament but when the Jews had returned from exile, they composed several Psalms of which Psalm 126 is one. They appreciated being back in their own land, and these were the words that they said: “The Lord has done great things for us, whereof we are glad!” If these Old Testament Jews could say such words about an earthly blessing, what should our reaction be and our ‘psalm’ of praise for our spiritual blessing! We have not been released from earthly captivity but spiritual captivity which would have taken us to a lost eternity. Whatever the world and life may throw at us, at least every morning and evening we should echo that psalm of praise because God has indeed done great things for us and we should rejoice in our freedom.
