The Daily Word

This morning, as many Sunday mornings, we will be coming together to have fellowship but specifically to remember our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. This service of remembrance is called by many different names, Communion; Eucharist, Breaking of Bread but the one name I wish to remind us of is the Lord’s Supper.

This points us back to the initiation of this service of remembrance, by the use of the word ‘Supper’, because it was in that Upper Room 2000 years ago that our Saviour first celebrated this with His Disciples, after supper.

The second reminder of what we will be doing is that it is the ‘Lord’s’. It is not something that we as humans have initiated, It belongs to Him, our Lord and Saviour, we are merely guests, we have no intrinsic right to be there, it is only because Jesus has become our Lord and Saviour that we can be there. Whilst the word ‘supper’ points us back in time, the fact that is it the Lord’s Supper takes us into the present. Before we can ever share the Lord’s Supper, we need to make sure that we really are, in the present, acknowledging Him as Lord, that there is nothing in our hearts and minds that would detract from His Lordship. We are meeting our Lord, around His Table, to share His Supper and that should fill us with awe, respect, thankfulness, and love.
